PRESIDENTS DAY OUT

An unexpected visitor to the ground in July 1987 was the then President Jimmy Carter, who stopped by after visiting Hadrian's Wall. His whistle stop tour had also taken in 'the' Washington which he had said he wanted to see. All the cricketers were amazed when his cavalcade turned up with lights flashing police outriders, and bodyguards. President Carter walked around the ground, and was free from players 'advice' even when he walked behind the bowlers arm. He chatted to the waiting batsmen asking about the rules, everyone said that he was very friendly. It was a piece of history being made since he had never seen a cricket match before. Baseball eat your heart out!

President Carter missed a good finish Wylam II scored 108, Humshaugh II getting the runs with just one over to spare.
